Last night was the contestants' final chance to sing a solo for the judges. There were 72 contestants left and last night they sang to the judges and were supposed to be receiving no feedback (though I saw several standing ovations and annoyed comments from them).
The show was a little confusing to watch because the timeline jumped all around all night long. It was the judges deliberating, then people auditioning, then contestants sitting and sleeping in holding rooms, then more auditions... But this is the jist of what went down:
The first featured solo was Adam Lambert. He's the kid with crazy black hair that wears guyliner. He sang a kind of cool version of Cher's "Believe." I liked it!
Next we see Matt Giraud playing the keyboard, he received a standing O from the judges with his rendition of "Georgia On My Mind".
Jamaar of "Danny & Jamaar" sings "Hey There Delilah" and I really enjoyed it though I think he's had better auditions on earlier shows. It wasn't terrible, he definitely deserves his spot in one of the 3 holding rooms who make the cut. He and Danny are quickly becoming my 2 favorite contestants on this show!
Danny of "Danny & Jamaar" sings next and does a nice little alternative version of "I Hope You Dance" which left Simon smiling.
Then we see a really quick montage of Anoop (My Prerogative), Scott The Blind Guy ("Going Home" while playing the piano and a bit pitchy in my opinion), Kendall Beard (singing a pitchy screetchy "Before He Cheats"), Stevie-I-Was-Named-After-Stevie-Nicks-Wright, Lil Rounds and Kristen MacNamara (doing a nice version of Kelly Clarkson's "Because Of You"). Some of the best/most interesting people we saw during the audition weeks and haven't heard anything about since... much to my annoyance!
We come back from commercial break to see a small video tidbit of Mishavonna Henson, who we're all supposed to remember from Season 7 where she got cut the 2nd day in Hollywood... well, NO we don't remember her because this is the 1st time we've even HEARD of her this season! Where's SHE been hiding? I'd have liked to have seen her audition and see what went down there.
Train Wreck Tatiana (that's my new name for her) gets up and warbles a really breathy, awful version of "Be My Baby Tonight" then flits off-stage gloating about how well she did. It was awful!
Another too-fast montage of some actually interesting/talented people includes Alexis Grace (Before He Cheats), Kenny, and Talented Jasmine (Tattoo).
Then Nathanial Marshall sings a cool version of Rhianna's "Disturbia" wearing a headband and playing the guitar. It was great I really liked it!
Joanna Pacitti, the girl who has already had several recording contracts and failed singles and features on movie soundtracks gets up and forgets her words and humms the rest of her audition looking around the stage aimlessly. Somehow she ends up in one of the "Yes" holding rooms and that just makes me ANGRY because now it definitely seems like she's a ringer, as if her impressive resume and connections to Kara weren't proof enough. She's followed by several others who forget their words like Casey Carlson, Stephen Fowler who asks for another chance to start over "just like Brooke White did on LIVE TV" points out Ryan Seacrest.
It's at this point that we break and see the contestants sitting in their holding rooms. The auditions have been over for hours, the judges have been deliberating and they decide to move Train Wreck Tatiana from her holding room to a different holding room which immediately makes everyone in the new room FREAK OUT.
Next up at the mic is Nick/Norman and I just want someone to STOP this man. He is horrible!! I am so tired of that stupid shirt and his stupid act. It's not even funny and his talent is so great that it makes up for the stupidness.
Another one of my favorites is up next, though I'm not completely convinced yet that she's not a ringer... It's Anne Marie Boskovich also sing "I Hope You Dance". I think it was smart of her to stick with that song, despite being worried at so many other contestants choosing it. Always go with your gut!!
Ju'not Joyner sings next. Ryan tells us that he's one of the judges early favorites but this is the 1st time we've ever seen him. He does a pretty good job with "Hey There Delilah".
Cut back to Tatiana who has been placed in Room 4 and more freaking out by the people she's with.
Kaylen Loyd is shown next singing "Nothing At All" and she's not happy with her performance, it was a little pitchy and her voice sounded tired.
Lanisha Young sings next and does "Love Song" by Sara Barielles.
Then it's Kai Kalama's turn... never heard of him before, but his voice is almost gone and you would think this would be the end for him... if he can't hack 3 days of singing, he's going to have trouble down the road... But I believe he ends up in one of the holding rooms that makes it!
Oil Rig worker Michael Sarver does a great version of "Nothing At All", he kind of rockified it ad it left all the judges smiling.
It's at this point that Simon has to catch a flight so he leaves, then they show Rapping India's solo of "One More Chance" which she's not doing so well with.
Randy, Paula & Kara start making the rounds to the holding rooms after finally reaching the final decisions on the finalists and Room 3 is full of the people who didn't make it, including India.
Rooms 1, 4, and 2 are safe for another day.
Tonight is the realllly tedious flashback/riding the elevator/sitting in a chair/getting jerked around by the judges for 30-40 seconds before being cut or making it episode...
Oh, and something about the Judges' Mansion... have to see what that's all 'bout...
Till then!
