Disco Night "You can really sing!"
So, results are in like, an hour or so and I'm just posting this now but it'll be short & to the point.
Lil sings first and the producers apparantly want her gone SO badly they're not even giving her any face time with Ryan in the chairs. They don't care what her motivation for choosing "Every Woman" is, they just want to get it over and done with, so the judges can comment on her offkey, lackluster performance and send her on her way out the door. Which is probably where she will be going tonight because despite FINALLY following the judge's advice and choosing a song that should have sounded good on her, it didn't. So, now we know it's not just poor song choice, Lil just isn't that good of a singer. Randy uses his line of the night for the first time, telling Lil "You can really sing" but what he means is "just not that good." Kara tells her that everyone has been waiting for her to do a song like this and it just wasn't worth the wait, well said, Kara, Paula tried to garner Lil a lil' sympathy by explaining the illness/vocal rest issue Lil has been dealing with all week but Simon calls it like it is and tells her that this was probably be her last week.
Up next is Kris who KILLS it with "She Works Hard For The Money". He totally un-discos this song and does a cool acoustic version that actually sounded kind of current. He's doing the David Cook thing really well, finding interesting versions and arrangements of songs and singing them well. He should be safe tonight. Randy has, like, no doubt that Kris "can REALLY SING" and Kara also had high praise for him and his artistic integrity. Paula, I think, was trying to commend him for choosing a good song, even though it is typically and originally sung by a woman, but what she actually said was "There are a lot of women willing to shop in the men's department but no a lot of men who will shop in the women's department. You did, and found a perfect fit." That unleashed a barrage of comments from the judge's that totally detracted from Kris's amazing performance and began to sound like they were insulting his manhood.
Following Kris is Danny Gokey who has an awesome voice and sings well and is an all around nice guy but is beginning to bore me to tears with song choices like last night's "September". Randy thinks Danny can "REALLY sing, dawg." Kara compliments another solid Danny performance with perfect pitch, Paula thinks, as a woman, that Danny has one of the sexiest voices she's ever heard, but Simon brings things back into perspective by pointing out that Danny is a little awkward and clumsy up there on the stage and despite his nice vocals just isn't that strong of a performer.
After Danny is my girl, Allison, with "Hotstuff" which I found just a little risque of a number for a 16 year old dressed in patent leather but she did it well and it was an interesting version, slowed down and kind of dirty. I liked it a lot. Randy did, too, because he doesn't care HOW old Allison is, she can (everyone together now...) "REALLY sing!" Kara thought slowing it down so much hurt her performance but I think she's wrong there. Paula and Simon both had praise for her as well.
Bringing Paula to tears is Adam Lambert with a slowed down version of "If I Can't Have You". He's looking adorable all dressed up in a suit, his vocals were great and it was a good performance. He really needs to be the hands down winner this season. I just don't see how it can go any other way. If you're a guy on this show, you have to know that you don't hold a candle to this guy, the only real challenger he has is Allison and that's just because she might eek out the teen girl vote over Kris. Randy says that Adam is a hot one tonight, Kara thinks he looks like Clark Kent, Paula was sobbing, Simon thought he would sing Donna Summer but also loves that Adam continually surprises him week after week.
Matt Giraud sings "Stayin' Alive" which Ryan points out is a commentary on his fate last week. Personally I thought it was a pretty bad choice considering he's probably the 2nd one on his way out the door tonight. I thought he actually did pretty good. He didn't have as many pitch problems as last week and I liked his dancing and even some of his riffs. So... we'll see how that goes. Randy has no doubt that Matt can "really sing" but just wasn't feeling it so much tonight, Kara liked the dancing, Paula thought Matt was great and picked the perfect song, Simon hated it.
And singing last is Anoop Desai with "Dim The Lights" which I liked. The only rough spot was the last note where his voice cracked and you could tell he knew he hit a bad note so at least he wasn't trying to play like he MEANT to sound that way, which is what I think Lil and Matt do so badly. Randy, Kara, and Paula all agree that Anoop has been on the past few weeks, Simon thought it was mediocre, at best.
So, I think Lil will probably be going home tonight for sure, but since it is a double elimination week I think it'll be a toss up between Matt and Anoop for who goes with her.
